Offering customers the option to purchase gift cards is a proven method for increasing revenue. Loyalty cards provide a mechanism for customer appreciation to keep them coming back.

There are two ways for a merchant to administrate gift & loyalty card programs - with a self-managed software-based system, or with a remote-managed third-party hosted system.

A self-managed system requires an investment in dedicated software but eliminates transaction fees. Cards must be redeemed and activated from the computer workstation or network upon which the software resides. Some computer-based point of sale systems include self-managed gift card and loyalty card administration.

A remote-managed system does not require the merchant to install any software, however, transaction fees are assessed by the provider. Such systems are generally offered by the payment acquirer as a separate account that is seamlessly integrated into the programming of the card swipe terminal or point of sale transaction processing method. These hosted systems also offer the customer a method for checking their stored-value card balance, either online via a website or through an automated telephone interface.
